Steel Frame Match

Special Order

Steel came back to the front of the match because mass wins — and Walther, who was tuning triggers for Olympic podiums before red dots existed, built the steel gun for the dot era: forty-one ounces under a five-inch barrel, tuned so the reticle never leaves the window.

The setup

The Steiner MPS boxes its emitter in metal — 3.3 MOA dot, Aimpoint ACRO footprint — so the window keeps working where an open emitter collects rain and lint. The ZR Tactical +4 basepads are billet aluminum over extra-power springs, from one of ZR’s limited purple runs.

Mass wins

Competition shooting spent a decade relearning an old truth. The polymer revolution made pistols effortless to carry — and carry weight means nothing on a stage, so the front of every major match filled back up with steel. Walther moved early: the PPQ Match in 2018, the steel-framed Q5 Match in 2019, then the same treatment for the PDP — a frame machined from solid steel, its forty-one ounces sitting exactly where the muzzle wants to lift. Through a dot the difference is unmistakable: the reticle dips and settles instead of leaving.

This is not a company that came to match shooting late. Walther’s .22 target pistols stood on Olympic podiums for decades before red dots existed, and the Steel Frame Match is that department’s thinking applied to a modern duty platform.

Built like a match gun

The Dynamic Performance Trigger comes standard — a crisp, clean break with an ultra-short reset built to be ridden at speed, the same unit shooters pay real money to retrofit into other PDPs. Around it, the rest of the match kit: a removable aluminum magazine well opening the way to faster reloads, an ambidextrous slide release, and full-wrap stippling with a checkered front strap that anchors the gun in a sweating hand.

The five-inch barrel is polygonally rifled, the slide is cut for optics under Walther’s plate system, and three twenty-round magazines come in the case. Every number on this sheet is Walther’s own.

This one

The slide carries a Steiner MPS — a 3.3 MOA dot on the Aimpoint ACRO footprint with the emitter boxed in metal, so the window keeps working where an open emitter collects rain and lint. The magazines wear ZR Tactical +4 extensions from one of ZR’s limited purple runs: billet aluminum over extra-power springs. The purple gets the attention; the steel is what it’s standing on.
