What you get
- Live-scan digital capture — a law-enforcement-grade optical scanner reads your rolled and flat prints directly off the glass. No ink, no cards, no mess
- Passport-style photograph taken in-shop, ATF-compliant
- FBI-grade quality check before you leave — every print is scored against the FBI's own NFIQ quality algorithm; anything short of standard gets re-captured on the spot, not mailed back to you as a rejection weeks later
- ATF-compliant electronic file generated through EFTSuite (the FBI/NBIS-based converter that ATF eForms accepts) — and you keep a copy, ready to upload to your application
- Demographic data review — we double-check name, DOB, SSN, address before submission so the ATF doesn't reject for clerical errors
- ~15-minute appointment — live-scan capture is fast; we still don't rush the quality check
When you'd use it
- ATF Form 1 — SBR conversion (you're building your own short-barreled rifle and need prints filed with your application)
- ATF Form 4 — suppressor or NFA item transfer (your dealer is out-of-state or in-state but doesn't do prints — you need them locally)
- ATF Form 5 — tax-exempt NFA transfer (LE / federal customers)
- NFA gun trust applications — every responsible person on a trust needs their own prints
- Any application that accepts a standard FD-258 / EFT — you keep the file and use it where you need it
Note on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act: the $200 NFA tax stamp was eliminated January 1, 2026 for suppressors, SBRs, SBSs, and AOWs. The fingerprinting requirement did not go away — the ATF still requires prints for every Form 1 / Form 4 / Form 5. We file them electronically through eForms; processing times are now averaging about 10 days.
Pricing — flat $50 per applicant
One price covers everything: prints, photo, EFT file generation, demographic review, and same-day email delivery. No surcharge for trusts with multiple responsible persons — we just book consecutive appointments. Full NFA paperwork bundles at other dealers commonly run $100–$200 per item on top of the transfer; ours is a flat $50 for fingerprinting, no per-item paperwork surcharge.
Compared to your other options
| Where | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| UPS Store (where available) | $65 per session | Prints + EFT, generic operator, no NFA context |
| Police / Sheriff (Bozeman PD) | $5–20 | Prints only on FD-258 card; you handle EFT yourself; limited hours |
| Silencer Shop kiosks | Free with their purchase / $25 otherwise | Locks you to a Powered-By-Silencer-Shop dealer for in-person certification on Form 1s |
| Mail-in services (Slap and Roll, etc.) | $30-50 + cost of you rolling your own prints | You roll the prints yourself (hard to get right), mail in for conversion |
| Northmark Arms | $50 | Prints + photo + ATF-compliant EFT, NFA-aware operator, same-day email, no kiosk lock-in |
How it works
1Book an appointment
Call (406) 518-7280. Tell us roughly what the prints are for (Form 1, Form 4, etc.) so we know if you need extra context. ~15-minute appointments, Monday through Saturday.
2Bring photo ID + payment
Government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport). Payment at the time of service — card, check, or ACH. Clean, dry hands — no hand lotion before the appointment (it smudges prints).
3We capture your prints
Live-scan digital capture — no ink, no cards. You relax and look away; we guide each finger across the scanner glass: a smooth roll for the first ten, a flat press for the four-finger slaps and each thumb. Every print is graded against the FBI's NFIQ quality algorithm as we go, and we re-capture on the spot if anything is short of standard — before you ever leave the chair. We also take your passport-style photo at the same appointment.
4We generate the electronic file
Your prints and demographic data are packaged through EFTSuite into an ANSI/NIST-ITL electronic file that ATF eForms accepts. We don't generate the file until every print slot passes the FBI's NFIQ quality check — so the file leaving our shop has already cleared the same bar the FBI applies on intake.
5Same-day delivery — you keep a copy
We send you the electronic file the same day — usually within an hour of the appointment ending. The file is yours to keep and upload to your ATF eForms submission. Want a printed FD-258 card too? We can print one straight from your digital capture — just ask.
Questions we hear
Why use you instead of the Silencer Shop kiosk in Manhattan?
Two reasons. First, you're not driving 30 minutes — we're in Bozeman. Second, if you're filing a Form 1 SBR (not a Form 4 suppressor purchase), the Silencer Shop process requires you to certify in person with a Powered-By-Silencer-Shop dealer; we don't have that lock-in. Use whichever is convenient; we're not trying to steal Silencer Shop customers — we're filling the gap for everyone who can't or doesn't want to use them.
Will the EFT file be accepted by ATF eForms?
Yes. EFTSuite is the active 2026-compliant successor to OpenEFT (which the maintainer officially deprecated as of Jan 1, 2026 because its older version generated files the new ATF validator rejects). EFTSuite generates ATF-compliant Type-14 EFT records under the 12 MB limit and runs NFIQ quality checks before output. If for any reason a print quality check fails after delivery, we re-roll at no additional charge.
What if I have a trust with multiple people?
Each responsible person on the trust needs their own set of prints + photo. Each is $50. Book consecutive appointments and bring everyone at once if you can — we can usually batch a trust in one visit.
Can I use this for non-firearms purposes?
FD-258 is the standard fingerprint card used by many federal background checks. If your application accepts FD-258 or its EFT equivalent, our service produces a valid card and file. If you're not sure, ask — we'll tell you straight.
Do you handle the eForms submission itself?
If we're also filing your Form 1 or Form 4 (you're our suppressor or SBR customer), yes — submission is included. If you're using us only for the fingerprint service and filing your application yourself, we email you the EFT file and demographics CSV so you can upload directly.
What's your turnaround?
Same-day for the EFT file (usually within 1–2 hours of the appointment ending). The ATF's processing time is separate — currently averaging about 10 days for Form 4s and similar for Form 1s.
